Tournament Recap: A Day of Success, Unity, and Excitement
We are thrilled to share the incredible success of our first Umoja Basketball Association of Kenya tournament, held on August 23! The event exceeded all expectations, with over 250 kids from across Nairobi coming together to compete in a day full of energy, excitement, and community spirit.
More than 25 teams participated, representing various neighborhoods in and around Nairobi. The tournament took place on two basketball courts, where an impressive 40 games were played throughout the day. The competition was fierce, and the atmosphere was electric, with the finals extending past 5 PM as the teams battled it out for the top spot.
What stood out most was the amazing display of team spirit and sportsmanship by all the participants. The kids played their hearts out, supporting each other and showing true respect for the game and their opponents. It was a proud moment for everyone involved.
Every player, coach, and referee was honored with medals and certificates of participation, recognizing their hard work, dedication, and contribution to making the tournament such a success. The joy on their faces was a testament to the positive impact this event had on everyone who took part.
In the days following the tournament, we’ve been excited to receive messages from additional teams eager to join the next event. The enthusiasm continues to grow, and it’s clear that the Umoja Basketball Association is becoming a beacon for youth basketball in Nairobi.
The surrounding community of Kibera played a huge role in this success, with many locals coming out to watch the games and cheer on the teams. The support and involvement of the community made the day even more special, highlighting the unity and connection that sports can bring.

This tournament represents more than just a series of basketball games; it is a beacon of hope and opportunity for many boys who face significant financial challenges. Many of these young athletes cannot afford basic basketball uniforms, which are essential for their participation and morale. Providing them with uniforms not only equips them for the tournament but also allows them to use these uniforms in their own schools, fostering a sense of pride and belonging.
Additionally, many of these children struggle to afford even the basic costs of their education. Your support can help us alleviate some of these burdens by covering the costs of uniforms, trophies, snacks, and water for the day. We also plan to offer a few giveaways to the children watching the game, making this event a truly memorable experience for all involved.
We have eight teams participating in the tournament, and a donation of $100 would significantly aid in covering the needs for one team. Any contribution, no matter the amount, will go a long way in making this day a success and providing a lasting positive impact on these youths.
